The most special night of the year the nights when the Kindness Cup is presented. A great celebration for the winner of the highest accolade.
I initially cringed at the magical worlds brief but quite enjoyed it in the end, right about the time I started adding fairy lights to the illustration.
The Brief: The ‘Magical Worlds’ prompt for #portfolioclub for this month got me thinking about ideal worlds, and how it would be if kindness was valued above all else and was the greatest achievement of success.
Life in this alternate reality would have cultivating kindness at the foundation of its values. It would be life’s work to be kind.
The brief had an ‘ethereal’ prompt and a defined four colour palette, which are not my normal colours therefore this was challenging, but I enjoyed working with them.
I spent time this year drawing trophies for illustration work to promote tennis club events for social media posts and on winner’s certificates. This work informed the development of the Kindness Cup.
The Kindness Cup with the cast iron work of the Paris Metro, which inspired the design. I love this art deco work by Lyonnais architect Hector Guimard.
I made the characters into silhouettes and gave them LED lit balloon and light up tulips. Added a little mist for atmosphere. The fairy lights, a fuzzy moon and multicoloured stars light the scene.
Great days start with great mornings so I wanted to create a positive, inspiring breakfast cereal in response to the brief: Create a fun sized design concept and packaging for a new cereal product.
I wanted to inspire and uplift women through a positive, confident image of a female pilot. She already has three stripes so she’s doing well; metaphorically and literally she is flying high.

The character was further inspired by the aviation PR work I’ve been busy enjoying in recent weeks, thanks to my client in Florida.
I thought that aeroplane shaped breakfast cereal would be fun and novel. This idea was warmly received in consumer testing, with enthusiastic feedback.
I later added the fruit, and additional cereal aircraft, into the bowl for the final iteration.
Once I had the character idea I felt the breakfast cereal design concept formed around her.
In order to create the entire packaging concept it was necessary to define the target market, and what would appeal to them, to decide the ingredients, flavours, also to create a cereal brand, logo and product name.
I had all this in mind when choosing the colour palette of gold, red wine and cobalt blue. These were colours I could use throughout to represent the morning sun, and the colourful sunrise sky.
I chose ‘Inspired Mornings’ for the cereal company brand, and after painting a sun in watercolours I recreated the round window effect of my ‘Inspire by Kim’ logo and added the new brand name.
Nutrition and natural ingredients are key to wellbeing, which is fuel for a positive frame of mind, so I wanted the flavours and sweetness to be natural, therefore I chose fruit flavours on a Tropical theme, This flavour choice was to evoke the idea that the pilot is flying to a tropical island destination.
Travel, new experiences and the relaxation enjoyed on holiday/ vacation are fundamental to enjoyment of life, so by bringing flavours that are associated with holidays into the cereal concept the consumer would start the day enjoying a breakfast that the brain can associate with positive, pleasant experiences and help the person benefit from the associated holiday feelgood factor.
By illustrating the ingredients it was possible to give the consumer quick visual references and these were to denote the fresh, healthy, natural qualities of the product and brand values.
The reverse side of the cereal box was a great fun opportunity to further inspire the consumer and providing positive affirmations to start the day, in the form of a circular word search.
The wordsearch was placed over the watercolour sun using my favourite digital application of present, Procreate.
I created a template to fit the sizes in the brief, 4×3 inches, and arranged the completed panels within this.
This was the completed concept.
I was delighted that as I completed the design I saw the Virgin Atlantic campaign to inspire young women with a day of activity using the hasttag #seeherfly Wonderful that this timing coincided with my design.
I’m pleased to have made it through to the fourth and final week of #Inktober. Here are this week’s ink artworks… apologies that they aren’t in order.
A tricky prompt was day 25, tasty. I did a line drawing which has been a bit of a breakthrough piece for me as it has helped me realise that it is conceptual illustration that I really want to excel at.
I did an ink line drawing which I then developed into a painted piece. Painted on the beach whilst on holiday in Turkey, in my favourite watercolours.
“The Doctor will see you now”. Ink and cherry 🍒 juice.
I’m not really into Halloween anymore but the illustration prompts are all part of the challenge. So here is my macabre drawing for the Day 22 #Inktober prompt Ghost and #portfolioclub which gave me the haunted prompts ‘doctor’ and ‘conservatory’.
Happened upon this ancient species today, sadly it was dead. So have honoured it for today’s #inktober2019 drawing.
This fascinating ancient species was a pleasure to study.
These next three pieces I drew inflight, whilst travelling back from my holiday. I find the seating and table position on aircraft ideal for drawing.
Inktober day 27 prompt is coat. This and recent observations made me think about how inhibitions, self-consciousness and fear can become a heavy, restrictive coat, holding a person back from fully enjoying life.
#Inktober day 29 prompt is Injured. This of course took me back to my knee injury and this climb back from injury that I’ve illustrated is ‘inspired’ by the long rehab experience.
I started with a page from #breathemagazine that I thought represented the climb back from the lows of injury, the uphill struggle and having to keep picking oneself up, both mentally and physically. Drawn inflight.
#Inktober day 31 – the final prompt of the month is Ripe. Without colour ripeness if a tricky thing to show so I thought about readiness, strength, mental preparedness in the form of belief, being at your best, in your prime and from somewhere came a superhero strawberry wearing power pants.
And with that I’ll call #inktober2019 officially done. And I’ll sigh, rest my eyes for a moment and then get on to the next project, powered up and ready for creative challenges.
Ps I find this piece kind of weird but haven’t got time to do anything else. 🤣
Also in a line drawn style I recently made this card for the newest bundle of joy to arrive in our family. Tiny sparkles were added to the paper card which was personalised with baby’s name and birth date.

Day 19 #inktober day 19 prompt is Sling. It’s about letting go of things that no longer serve you so that they can benefit someone else. Western society is so consumerist it’s easy to loose the sense of what is ‘genuine need’ and what is ‘want’. Bank balances and the environment can benefit from less emphasis on having and wanting.
#inktober day 21 prompt is ‘Treasure’. Treasure the love that you receive.
This made me thing about accepting love from those who love you. Often in life we can go seeking love elsewhere when we have so many people who already love us. So this message is about gratitude, acceptance and embracing what you already have.
Michael Mason, Chairman of Ridgeway Tennis Club, said, “Our membership numbers have increased this year which is good news and is mainly due to the two Open Mornings we held. Subscriptions were up on the previous year.
“The publicity for both of these Open Mornings differed from our previous publicity drives in that much more use of social media was made and for this we have Kim to thank for both her creative abilities in producing some eye-catching posts on Facebook etc. as well as A4 posters to put up around the area, so I thank her very much for that and the time she has spent doing the publicity. It has made a real difference. I hope that the new members enjoyed their first summer of tennis.”
Here are the highlights including social media visual content, promotional communications and posters.
The objectives may were to attract new members and to improve existing member communication and engagement. A new Facebook page, a members’ Facebook group and sharing visual promotional content on local community Facebook pages achieved the objectives.

Identifying the club’s key messages at the outset of the work, setting a limited colour palette and visual identity for the clubs poster sites and Facebook page established a brand identity, atmosphere and clear top line information for the public, new and established members.
Event promotion through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using still content and gifs increased local awareness of the club and boosted attendance, adding value for members and bringing new income through the additional membership fees – which allow the club to offer tennis coaching to children in the local community at accessible prices.
Courtside poster sites were fully utilised with posters stating the club’s membership benefits, timetable, coaching programme and key events. Maintained and updated through the season.
Member testimonials with creative photography were used to support the club’s key messages.
Bali Parasol contacted me having seen my work on Instagram. They required clear instructional illustrations for how to put up their beautiful parasols, when new.
I accepted the work as I’m enjoying building the visual part of my business and am increasingly aligning this with my existing public relations, promotion and business strategy work.
New instructional illustrations and care advice would replace the existing instruction sheet. This would assist the customers enjoy their Bali parasol immediately, and secondly would free up resource by reducing after delivery queries.
The company provided a brief and suggested the illustrations for the stages of the process, along with outline wording.
It was important to brand the drawings to protect the sheet from being copied, so I was asked to work the Bali Parasol into the illustrations.
The sooner the work was completed the sooner the new instructions would be on their way to customers.
I created thumbnails of the different steps, planning out whether they would be wide action drawings or close ups. I added a couple of extra stages to those briefed to make the instructions unequivocal.

This is the final A4 document that I created, it will be received along with the parasol.
It’s exciting to think of my drawings being sent around the world with a beautiful parasol as their travel companion, a little bit like the magic carpet ride in Disney’s Aladdin movie. This thought inspired the lead image for this post.
I’m delighted with the work, really enjoyed the brief as the product is so beautiful and intricately detailed and crafted. It was a pleasure to create and Ilse at Bali Parasol was delightful to work with.

Build is Day 5 prompt for #Inktober.
Build made me think to turn it on it’s head and for there to be a reuse, renew and recycle approach to buildings. There are stunning old buildings being left unused and unloved in and new ground is being broken and wildlife disturbed for new characterless box like homes.
Busy day working on an illustration job so just one take and 15 minutes for this one.

Inktober day 6 prompt is Husky. I don’t have one of those but I do have a lot of love, loyalty, kindness and fun with this little guy.
Drew this pose a year ago. Scroll to see. Wondered how it would look a year on. Somehow it turned into a poolside pose this year. I do still like the atmosphere created in that earlier drawing.
Cheers to dogs and the wonderful contribution they make to our lives.
Enchanted: Inktober Day 7 prompt made me think of The Magic Faraway Tree. Started with that idea and then built the details from there.
