Spot The Difference

A little fun for you or the youngsters…

There are more than 12 differences between these two garden pictures.

Created in watercolour paints, scanned with the wonderful Cam Scanner app and a little play in my favourite Pixelmator app.

A little summer fun on a beach hut/ garden theme. Enjoy.

Bird and Flowers Cushion Design

I was asked to make a colourful cushion featuring a bird and flowers with this drawing from a lovely customer:

image 8

I thought about whether I might seek such a fabric design, but I didn’t have the desire to go hunting for a fabric, so I designed my own.

Having found painted designs that the dye colours can mush together I decided to try a collage technique, as developed in some of my favourite work, my paper cut pictures.

I firstly prepared papers by  carefully painting them with transfer dyes then cut and assembled pieces to build a design. I liked the composition on a cute practice design (above), but felt that the colours lacked texture and depth. So I tried wax relief frottage techniques learned at UAL Chelsea and also hand-painted my favourite flowers inspired by our own garden and a visit to the wonderful tulip gardens of Keukenhof and the Botanical Garden in Leiden earlier this year. I challenged myself to limit colours to the wine red, golden yellow and turquoise Colourcraft Transfer Dyes.

I cut shapes and enjoyed assembling these to form the design for the main panel of the cushion.

See the design process in this one minute video…

Instagram Highlights

April was a bright and creative month, here are the highlights from my Instagram feed. Enjoy!

Better late than never!

First up was a cupcake themed cushion that I made for a close relation.

Lush pink, grey and teal design. It was a huge pattern repeat so I made a booster cushion with different parts of the design front and back. As I know I’ll be asked the question, the fabric was from Direct Knit and Sew in Sheffield.

Ta da! Here’s the finished cushion. It really was a work of love as it was for someone I love and I love the outcome. The pink ribbon edging the cushion really makes the colours pop.

I started work on a second hand sewn dog portrait. This time featuring Sam, who has been in many of my papercut paperart collage artworks and was the protagonist I’m my illustrated storybook.

I made pretty bunting for my sewing space. Dyeing the fabric using sublimation inks and then stitching into and embellishing the panels. The satin ribbon feels gorgeous.

I used trational machine stitch, love the clear acrylic foot – it’s an essential tool for me, and also used free machine embroidery.

The little boat and clouds are from fabric that I dyed at a workshop last summer at Stitched Up And Fleeced textile studio in Sheffield.

I tried something a little different with my Paperart on one of my favourite icons for a happy day, Ice-cream.

I repainted my Maison du Monde Smile sign to make it more me, white emulsion the flicked my favourite paint colours.

This large canvas happened out of a study for another piece. As it was drying we decided we quite liked it so this is how it is completed, for now. 😊

The above canvas artwork was created using a drag method I had been playing with.

The final make of the month was a peg bag using bright screen printed fabric, printed by a fellow student.

Here are stories that relate to these artworks. Enjoy seeing the backstories.

Instagram Highlights…

Here’s the latest bright posts from my Instagram feed.

Enjoy the posts…

There’s something lovely about pencil crayons, the potential to create and the nostalgia of art as a child.

Inspired by this leggings fabric I created a floral repeat pattern digitally.

Putting the repeat pattern into kaleidoscope created a stunning, striking pattern.

I had a little yarn left from the jumper I made which I put with my favourite yarn to make a Unicorn Inspired Pom-Pom. Love the effect and it feels so delicate and light to hold.

I created a repeat pattern with the Pom-Pom work in progress photo in my favourite app Pixelmator.

I celebrated International Women’s Day with a number of my fabulous females, here’s my favourite one. An illustration I created for a client who was organising a women’s empowerment event. This was created in Sheffield made product Brusho.

The inspired female brain, how it feels when my brain is inspired and loving an activity. A second Women’s Day illustration.

A surface design group that I’m part of on Facebook had the brief of a Fairy Doors pattern. I combined hand drawings with watercolours, techniques from Bill Wright’s Illustration ecourse. Bill is a tutor at Central St Martin’s within University of the Arts London.

I love the tulip, crocuses and daffodils of spring. These lush tulips were a beautiful Mother’s Day gift. 😍

The garden is looking lovely, just need some fine weather to enjoy it. On a cloudy day the tete a tete daffodils are like mini shining suns.

A trip to the Morgan Factory in Malvern was fascinated. Beautiful handcrafted cars in a great range of colours. You can have any colour you wish.

Snow outside was a great opportunity for a crafternoon. When it’s bleak outside the strongest colours appear in my art. Made this with markers.

Paper Art Time-Lapses

I’ve been enjoying it Paperart again as a means of illustrating. Having seen the time-lapse videos by artists on Instagram I was keen to have a go. So camera on tripod I was all set to create and capture the process.

My First And Last Jumper

The first and last jumper I will ever knit. Love the end result and enjoyed the challenge of the process of the first and last jumper I will ever knit. ✅ Here’s the work in progress pictures…

Making without a pattern was challenging and brain engaging. Other people said I was brave, but I don’t regard it as brave, there was no threat of danger.

I’m hanging up my needles now so a pair of jumbo knitting needles are for sale. Message me if interested.

#Inktober Week 4 – The Finale

What an experience Inktober has been. An ink drawing a day for 31 days. This was my first #Inktober.

Week One, Week Two, and my favourite week Week Three, drawings are at these clicks. Interesting to feel the progression and development of daily practice has had on my drawing skills, I feel that I use and hold the pen differently and can mark the paper more accurately. My typography and lettering is much more how I’d like it to look as I try to convey different energy in the words.

It’s been great to part of something global and see what different responses have been created to the prompt words (pictured). The challenge was to draw and instagram a drawing each day for 31 days.

‘Juice’ was Day 23’s prompt word. As I’m working on ‘series’ of illustrations I created series of fruity characters. #inktober2017 #inktober #illustration #illustrator #sheffieldartist #fruit #juice #lemon #orange #lime #grapefruit #pendrawings #strawberry #sun #eshortcourses #characters
#inktober ‘Juice’ character drawing developed further. Day 24’s prompt word is ‘Blind’. Rightly or wrongly this is what came to mind.
After a muddy walk it was wash and hairdryer time. #inktober2017 #illustration #dog #ink #illustrator #dogsofinstagram #lhasaapsosofinstagram #inktober #poochpal
‘Ship’ - Day 25 of #Inktober was an enjoyable half hour. Day 26 - ‘Squeak’ made me think of how we try to make our voice heard through such a crowd of communication. I wanted to practice drawing faces. #inktober2017 #inktober #illustration #illustrator #portraits #sheffieldartist #ink #drawing

#inktober motivation
This #inktober motivation for the final days was rousing.

‘Today’s #inktober prompt word ‘Climb’ set me thinking about climbing over adversity aiming for a good life, our efforts supported by love, inspiration and experience - weighed down by fear, held back by negativity but helped along by resilience, determination and by those who believe in us. I’m really pleased with this piece as it’s very aligned with the values that underpin my work. There’s  more from me at my Facebook page and Instagram feed and oodles of art experimentation and art challenges here to explore.

I’m looking for live illustration briefs to get stuck into so if you have one please give me a shout. I’ll be developing these drawings further under the guidance of your illustration tutorworking on sewn art and ski fitness for November too.

Thanks for popping by😊. Happy November.

Inktober Week 3 – Past The Mid Point!

I feel like week three has been a turning point and I can start to see dividend in the daily practice of creating an ink drawing a day for 31 days.

Here are my #inktober drawings from the third week of the challenge, they are to fit the #Inktober2017 prompt words but also are created to fit the briefs of the eshortcourse in Illustration I am studying with Bill Wright, tutor at Central St Martins.

‘Mysterious’ in Bic biro. ‘Mysterious’ #Inktober Day 15. I tried to capture elements that connote mystery and bring them together in a composition.
I really wrestled with how to illustrate #fat for #inktober2017. With Sweet fatty foods coming at her our girl is running away from fat by working out at the gym, as fat chases on.

A Good Walk – #inktober2017 – Day 18’s prompt word is ‘Filthy’ so I chose to create a series of illustrations as a reportage. The drawings follow…

Clouds Ink Drawing
‘Cloud’ – Keeping it simple for Day 19. I love clouds, do t always want to see them but they can be canvases for the most beautiful colours at this time of year.
‘Deep’ made me think of navel gazing introspection.
‘Furious’ was my hurry to collect my train tickets for London, with two minutes to spare.
Bell Pepper Allergy Illustration to show to restaurant staff when ordering.
Ashalak boots made in Ibiza, from Las Dalias market
Day 21 was ‘Trail’, which made me think of exploting the streets of London with my family. I love these Ashalak boots, they were made in Ibiza. I found them at Las Dalias market.

Into the home straight now – here are the prompt words to come.
