#Inktober Week 4 – The Finale

What an experience Inktober has been. An ink drawing a day for 31 days. This was my first #Inktober.

Week One, Week Two, and my favourite week Week Three, drawings are at these clicks. Interesting to feel the progression and development of daily practice has had on my drawing skills, I feel that I use and hold the pen differently and can mark the paper more accurately. My typography and lettering is much more how I’d like it to look as I try to convey different energy in the words.

It’s been great to part of something global and see what different responses have been created to the prompt words (pictured). The challenge was to draw and instagram a drawing each day for 31 days.

‘Juice’ was Day 23’s prompt word. As I’m working on ‘series’ of illustrations I created series of fruity characters. #inktober2017 #inktober #illustration #illustrator #sheffieldartist #fruit #juice #lemon #orange #lime #grapefruit #pendrawings #strawberry #sun #eshortcourses #characters
#inktober ‘Juice’ character drawing developed further. Day 24’s prompt word is ‘Blind’. Rightly or wrongly this is what came to mind.
After a muddy walk it was wash and hairdryer time. #inktober2017 #illustration #dog #ink #illustrator #dogsofinstagram #lhasaapsosofinstagram #inktober #poochpal
‘Ship’ - Day 25 of #Inktober was an enjoyable half hour. Day 26 - ‘Squeak’ made me think of how we try to make our voice heard through such a crowd of communication. I wanted to practice drawing faces. #inktober2017 #inktober #illustration #illustrator #portraits #sheffieldartist #ink #drawing

#inktober motivation
This #inktober motivation for the final days was rousing.

‘Today’s #inktober prompt word ‘Climb’ set me thinking about climbing over adversity aiming for a good life, our efforts supported by love, inspiration and experience - weighed down by fear, held back by negativity but helped along by resilience, determination and by those who believe in us. I’m really pleased with this piece as it’s very aligned with the values that underpin my work. There’s  more from me at my Facebook page and Instagram feed and oodles of art experimentation and art challenges here to explore.

I’m looking for live illustration briefs to get stuck into so if you have one please give me a shout. I’ll be developing these drawings further under the guidance of your illustration tutorworking on sewn art and ski fitness for November too.

Thanks for popping by😊. Happy November.

Ski Fit Illustrations

After major knee injury my resolve ran thin after so many repetitive exercises. I needed new impetuous and accountability to push on with vigour.

As steps on my path back to skiing I created exercise boards to inspire me and illustrate the exercises that will help strengthen. I’m studying illustration at present with Bill Wright, from Central St Martins.

Now I really have no excuse… I’ll schedule it in my calendar to try to get to it regularly. Maybe stating my intention here to do this 5 times a week will  spur me on…

Media Coverage

I’m delighted that the Sheffield Star newspaper have covered my exhibition on page 12 of today’s paper.

Here’s the press release issued about the project:

Designed to Inspire – Art Exhibition

Kimberley Kay, working as ‘Inspire by Kim’, has developed a range of ‘Everyday Inspiration’ products – exhibited at The Workstation Gallery in Sheffield this week.

Kim explained, “I create to inspire and uplift people, with bright designs and delightful fabrics that add colour to everyday routines.”

“At Sheffield College I’ve explored creative ways to communicate, studied textile techniques and developed pattern designs. I honed manufacturing skills to make a delightful product range of bags, clothing and accessories. The products come together in a catalogue to engage retailers and customers.

“I share my work in progress through my website, Facebook page and Instagram feed, which provides feedback for the development of my products. The digital world means its possible to reach out to people globally, if people can feel a little happier from seeing my work that’s a wonderful thing.”

“My goal is to have a successful art business of commissioned work, illustration, products, and inspiring, creative workshops for local people. I’m determined so it’s a matter of keeping going forwards, step by step.”

Kim has been studying with Design & Visual Arts Department at the Hillsborough Campus of Sheffield College. The end of year exhibition covers Art & Design, Games Design, Graphic Design and Photography and takes place at The Workstation, until 8pm on Thursday 15th June.

Kim’s cheesegrater Sheffield souvenir idea received acclaim from Sheffield Design Week in November 2016.

Thanks for being here.

The Inspire Bear

Ta da: I’m delighted to share the Inspire by Kim bear. Made from fabrics that I have designed using techniques including batik, tie dye, dry point printing.

When flicking through a magazine that my friend brought two years ago after my knee injury I saw a bear pattern that I just had to make in my fabrics.

Now I’m not naturally a recipe/ pattern/ instruction follower by nature, but my keenness to make the bear helped me follow the steps in the Craft Seller article, which surprised both me and my loved ones.

Starting to emerge
There was a little magic happened when I started making in fabrics that I have created myself. I chose contrasting fabrics ext to each other for a colourful, as you’d expect from me no doubt, cheery bear.

I used free machine embroidery to add a colourful heart and make his nose.

Read to be turned out
Loving the fabric colours meant that I loved the process. The making was also a great boot camp for my sewing techniques as the size of the bear made for small seam allowances which were sometimes fiddly.

The bear is intended to delight. He carries the messages ‘Be’ and ‘Light’ as a reminder not to take things too seriously, easier said than done. His ear has the Inspire by Kim brand and he has ‘Kim’  on his foot, a little nod to the Tou Story films with Buzz Lightyear and Woody each having ‘Andy’ on their foot.

Bashful Bare

I’m wondering about adding eyes, but I’m going to sleep on that as I’m liking him just as he is right now.

I’m excited to see where this latest make will lead to next. Watch this space and follow my blog if you’ve enjoyed this post.

My Week on Instagram

As I don’t post everything on my blog here’s the latest from my Instagram feed. I like the instantaneousness of Instagram and the global reach. Lovely to think of someone  thousands of miles away viewing my artworks.

I announced that I will be speaking and exhibiting at an International Women’s Day Event on 8th March, and created this artwork for the event marketing.

img_1976

I continue to develop my learning of developing repeating patterns, this time using a watercolour and metallic mandala, based on techniques learned whilst studying with Jessica Swift’s Pattern Camp.

img_9589

I like to take a peek at photos I took a year ago and saw this painted lady. I added a face and replaced the background to make a vibrant image with the mantra – Stride On – You’ve Got This. A positive nudge for anyone who may be struggling with January Blues.

I shared the video of the creation of my latest commissioned artwork for a Manchester United Football Club fan.

I played with some fabrics that I had screen and collograph printed to create a moulage on a mannequin. And realised that fashion may be my guilty pleasure.

Football Commissioned Artwork

I’m delighted to reveal my latest artwork, my largest commission to date – for an avid Manchester United fan. Sharing the story of this artwork is poignant as it is the two year anniversary of blowing my knee, the event which led me to follow my love of art.

The 60 x 90 cm original artwork of Manchester’s world famous football club, created to meet with a detailed customer brief, charts the club’s history in a timeline, from Newton Heath to present day, including the Munich Disaster, and the treble win in 1999.

Viewed from the Stretford End the artwork depicts the energy of a 70,000 strong crowd on a vibrant match day at Old Trafford football ground. The composition spans the clubs history and brings together key players, managers and moments of the clubs highlights. Landmarks of the the city of Manchester are in the distance.

The artwork represents Eric Cantona, Sir Matt Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson, The Magnificent Sevens – Best, Robson, Beckham, Ronaldo and the VIP fan.

The ad boards display inspiring words and the goals are formed of written quotes chosen by the customer.

Commissioned by the customer as a surprise for her partner, the artwork was completed in December 2016.

This challenging commissioned football themed painting allowed me to communicate energy and positivity, which are key intentions of my ‘Inspire by Kim’ work.

The artwork came about after the customer saw my Barnsley Boy commissioned artwork, completed in late 2015.

It is now two years since I blew my knee skiing, the event which was the impetus to the decision to become a full time artist. Having completed this artwork helps to heal the impact of the injury and rehabilition which I have undertaken ever since.

This artwork is for an individual and is not connected to or endorsed by the football club.
