Instagram Highlights

April was a bright and creative month, here are the highlights from my Instagram feed. Enjoy!

Better late than never!

First up was a cupcake themed cushion that I made for a close relation.

Lush pink, grey and teal design. It was a huge pattern repeat so I made a booster cushion with different parts of the design front and back. As I know I’ll be asked the question, the fabric was from Direct Knit and Sew in Sheffield.

Ta da! Here’s the finished cushion. It really was a work of love as it was for someone I love and I love the outcome. The pink ribbon edging the cushion really makes the colours pop.

I started work on a second hand sewn dog portrait. This time featuring Sam, who has been in many of my papercut paperart collage artworks and was the protagonist I’m my illustrated storybook.

I made pretty bunting for my sewing space. Dyeing the fabric using sublimation inks and then stitching into and embellishing the panels. The satin ribbon feels gorgeous.

I used trational machine stitch, love the clear acrylic foot – it’s an essential tool for me, and also used free machine embroidery.

The little boat and clouds are from fabric that I dyed at a workshop last summer at Stitched Up And Fleeced textile studio in Sheffield.

I tried something a little different with my Paperart on one of my favourite icons for a happy day, Ice-cream.

I repainted my Maison du Monde Smile sign to make it more me, white emulsion the flicked my favourite paint colours.

This large canvas happened out of a study for another piece. As it was drying we decided we quite liked it so this is how it is completed, for now. 😊

The above canvas artwork was created using a drag method I had been playing with.

The final make of the month was a peg bag using bright screen printed fabric, printed by a fellow student.

Here are stories that relate to these artworks. Enjoy seeing the backstories.

Have a n-ice day! Sewing challenge

This was my written intention at the outset of my latest make inspired by ice cream.

Ice Cream beauty/ tech tablet/ make up bag.

Ice Cream van made using appliqué in key colours of fabrics, including my silk painted fabrics, as the front panel design for bag. Two lollies and an ice cream made in appliqué. All arranged on indigo dyed fabric using shibori technique. Heatpress printee onto silk, padded and machine embroidered to accentuate the ice cream van and ices.

Reverse side of the bag  is an ice cream, lollies and the scanned appliqué van on an indigo shibori ground as a repeat pattern. Which will be printed on satin, sort padded and then quirky quilting.

The ice cream texture is akin to a cloud and some could be pink. Zip pull of an ice- cream in shrink plastic.

The one main side, with repeat pattern on reverse, approach inspired by my cushion from Las Dalias market, Ibiza.

Complementary coloured bag liner or could heatpress a design onto wipeable lining. That could have a secret message or mantra for the bag owner.

It must be made with love. Look for the love and stay in love to get the magic. That said it doesn’t need to be perfect, that should not delay its creation.

And here it is… completed.

Here are the creation stages, I’m pleased with this bag.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this post. Here are related posts, enjoy😊.

I decided to develop a beauty bags concept. I first create a boxed unlined beauty bag from a repeat pattern fabric that I had created.

I then decided to take my Ice Cream Paper Picture and heat press it onto satin to make panels for a bag.

I machine embroidered a wadding backed printed satin panel

I decided that a main panel on the front with a repeat pattern design on the back panel might work nicely. So I made the pattern elements and then created the pattern digitally in my favourite app Pixelmator. As learned in Jessica Swift’s online  course Pattern Camp

I printed out the designs onto heat fuseable paper then ironed them onto fabric and sewed a fully lined (invisible seam) bag on my fabulous Bernina machine.

And finally, for now, I made a bag from satin featuring a design I created in printmaking and digitally. The bag is also  fully lined with hidden seams and is machine embroidered.

This one feels quality and I’m proud of it. The colours and design work well.

I adapted two online instructions from a website and YouTube tutorial to make the bag.

Finishing touch – matching zip pull.
The bags are a key part of the final major project for my art Foundation course, and I have my first ‘selling to the public’ event next month.

Thanks so much for viewing this feature, you’re invited to stay a while and take a look around. I hope you enjoy your ‘Inspire’ time.
