#PortfolioClub September -Folk Costume

I cringed when I read the brief for September’s #portfolioclub “Folk Costume”, but illustration briefs aren’t always going to be something I’m jumping up and down to illustrate, so I ploughed on, trying to keep an open mind.

However I have enjoyed the exercise; probably because I decided to illustrate a costume based on my favourite things, the sun, nature and rainbows. If Inspire by Kim was a country this would be the costume, echoing the beauty of life.

This was an early drawing where I was developing the idea of the costume mirroring the environment.

I developed the idea whilst travelling so in black pen and then added colour digitally.

the Inktense version was less effective.

This concept then started to feel a little fluffy and idealistic and wasn’t saying enough about my causes. So I had a think about what the costume would be for this theme…

I might revisit this alternative concept but the first concept felt incomplete. I came to the conclusion that either way a folk costume should be illustrated using fabric.

So I free machine embroidered the design onto a shiny fabric from @sunnybankmills.

I then painted the design with fabric paints from @colourcraft.

Next stage was to hand sew and embellish the dress.

Here’s the completed work with embroidery silks, thread, metallic thread, glass beads and crystal organza.

I’m pleased with the final outcome and now wondering what next month’s #portfolioclub will be. See all the illustrations at the #portfolioclub hashtag on Instagram.

Reflecting on a creative August

I’ve really enjoyed creating in August. The month started off with the Helen Dardik workshop in Rotterdam which was beautiful and inspiring. The month and art has flourished from there.

I created an illustrated map, an instructional illustration for #PortfolioClub, an illustrated Recipe prompted by Flow Magazine’s book 50 Ways To Draw Your Beautiful Ordinary Life. I also created a party invitation book cover and stitched/painted self portrait.

I added new items to my Folksy shop as we start to get ready for the busy festive period.

Inspiration On Your Wrist – Design Concept

Wearable tech could improve positivity – make a huge difference to a person’s mindset, rippling throughout their life and relationships for fulfilling outcomes.

I developed a smart watch concept that will monitor pulse, body temperature and motion in order to prompt timely delivery of motivating images and inspiring messages.

For example; elevated heart rate, without physical movement, could be an indicator of anxiety – in this instance the device would alert the wearer, through tone, music track, vibration and/or screen lighting up, to inspiring content, tailored for them through preferences selected in an app.

The smart watch design prototype
The watch console would slip into a stretchy elastic strap that can be changed and easily replaced. Comfort, own choice of design, washable, changeable and inexpensive.

The strap idea came from my custom designed and printed hair and wrist bands.

There could be the option for the wearer to print their own strap design at home – making their product unique.

The idea is developing and I wonder whether this could be an app in itself. Will explore that idea.

First Birthday and Art Exhibition Evening

Inspire by Kim is  now one year old. it has been a heck of a first year and culminated in my exhibition launch evening last Thursday. Friends, family and art buddies came together to see my artworks including oil paintings, Collograph, Lino prints, digital and paper cut pictures.

My exhibition lasts for the month of April at the Airy Fairy Cafe and Gift Shop. I feel blessed to be holding this exhibition and accomplishing this big step with my art.‪

For me it’s about reaching out to inspire people, to add a splash colour and energy to counter some of the darkness of the news media and world events, to brighten and hopefully uplift someone’s day. To raise a smile, to evoke a positive feeling. To spark a memory, spread a little nostalgia which could become seeds of hope. To reach hearts and minds with possibility of a better world, one artwork, one day at a time.

Not everyone will like what I do, but if it makes someone feel a little brighter then who knows where a small ripple could lead. This is why I create and share.

Here are some images from the Exhibition launch evening.

Prior to the exhibition the highlights of the past 12 months were:

Art Challenge 33 – My First Art Commission!

Art Challenge 34 – Football Fan Artwork

Self Portrait – Number 52 – the FINAL art challenge

I wonder what the next 12 months will bring, exciting times.
