Life Drawings on Lino

Life drawing is important for my work as my art is very much about feeling good about life and doing one’s best to stay positive, as I’m female the characters in my art are most often female, so being able to represent women through drawing is important.

A number of life drawing sessions were timetables for the start of the Foundation Studies course, as the figure is considered to be one of the hardest things to draw.

I used a beautiful life drawing from UAL Chelsea and used Lino cutting techniques to cut into rubber.

I added feathers when printing. I’m delighted with the outcomes.

Love the contrast between the colours

I love the vividness of the colours achieved and contrast with printing inks on the white paper.

I think I prefer this print reversed…

I cleaned the Lino with white spirit then cut further her into the Lino and re-inked and created more prints.

The second part of this challenge was to Lino cut directly from looking at the life model using just the cutting tool and Lino. Here are the resulting prints with the bright colours being inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s ceiling murals that I saw in Zurich Police Headquarters last week.

Drawing in Metal – Art Challenge 54

The challenge was to draw in metal. So annealing, rollering, hammering, spot welding were all involved. Enjoyed it more than I expected.

I explored feathers for most of the work – I love their delicacy and fine detail. Beauty that falls from the sky to delight us.

The outcomes were to be potential entries for South Yorkshire Dementia Creative Art Exhibition 2017 @SYDCAE poster image.

I created this image using one of my life drawings with a photograph of the feather.

And found a colourful curious fish wanting to emerge from this image. 😊

Lino Printing – Art Challenge 49

My first experience of lino printing proved enjoyable and productive.

Based on a digitally collaged image of an angel protected by a colour bubble and an outer bubble I drew the image onto tracing paper to transfer onto a piece of lino.

The lino was then placed on a warming plate until it was warmed enough to make etching the lino have a buttery feel.

I etched along the lines of the drawing and then added the word Peace.

Then wearing an apron, hair tied back and barrier cream on my hands I applied ink with a roller onto a second piece of lino to create a background. I put the background lino sheet and a piece of paper through the roller press.

I then inked my etched piece of lino and then put the roller press over this to transfer the etched design onto the background.

I tried different combinations of background colour and sometimes added neat ink and white to add tone to the background.

I created many different iterations to become accustomed to the process. I then began to pick out key elements of the design in different colours.

I quickly realised that I should have reversed the letters for the “Peace’ slogan, but the sake of effect i have reversed the photos.

I thoroughly enjoyed the process and hope to try collograph printing next.
