Blackpool Icons Textile Project

I wanted to make a really special and unique gift for a loved one, encapsulating all the things they love about Blackpool and the Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire.

I transferred carefully selected images to a range of fabric textures using sublimation and gel medium methods. Then stitched into the images before assembling them in a kind of patchwork.

I added hand painted seaside icons such as ice-creams, buckets and spades, fish and chips.

I included some of my own repeat pattern fabric designs and sewed into the design to represent the sea, rollercoasters, the beach and also to accentuate elements of the design.

I chose a candy stripe fabric to represent rock and a fun ice lolly fabric for the reverse side of the cushion. Bright blue bias binding and zip really made the colours ‘pop’ in the design.

I’m delighted with the outcome, as is the recipient who hopefully will have many hours enjoying the images, detail and references which will evoke nostalgia, memories and encourage a new way of seeing a favourite place to visit.

Here’s a one minute movie of the project…

Embroidered Dog Portrait

White dog portrait created in silks, yarn and thread on dyed fabric.

Lhasa-Apso Portrait of my little buddy in embroidery silks

After the success of the embroidered portrait earlier this year I decided to try to create an embroidered portrait of Sam, the white dog that has featured in a number of my paper artworks, and whom I painted previously in acrylic paints before, paintings which became an illustrated children’s book.

Hand painted portrait of lovely Sam which became a page in the book

I chose a teal/ turquoise cotton fabric that I had dyed. I chose the colour as it was the colour of Sam’s favourite toy, and echoes the style of the portraits that I painted on bright bold coloured backgrounds.

I gradually built the design using hand sewing, deciding to add fluffy white yarn that was left after I knitted the jumper on jumbo needles.

I was struggling to get a likeness and lost momentum in the project so decided to inject some energy by continuing the piece on my sewing machine with a transparent foot, and also with a darning foot to use free motion embroidery techniques.

This worked and I was able to sew into the design, develop the likeness and then finished the final elements by hand. Here’s a 43 seconds short video of how the work developed.

I’m pleased with the final outcome and can now decide how best to display the work in my gallery.

Brand Art – Steel Company

Using my marketing and PR background I’ve been working on communications and brand work for Lancashire and Yorkshire based Steel Stockholders K Steels.

Keen to increase awareness and attract new customers and communicate with existing customers I assisted with liaison for a brand new website and new logos, created with Alpha State and US2DESIGN respectively.

I shot and edited two short videos to illustrate the business succinctly.

K Steels Video

Then using photography, hand drawn and digitally created methods I illustrated key facts of the business. Creating an Infographic for use in social media.

Here are the two Infographic versions – one for each of the warehouse sites.

I then made the infographic into an infographic video, to demonstrate the key aspects of the business in less than 1 minute. Click on the above link to watch it on YouTube.

The work is part of activity to celebrate two landmark anniversaries, 40 years at the K Steels Lancashire warehouse and 30 years of The warehouse of K Steels Yorkshire. Here are the commemorative icons that I created.

The following creative is an image to accompany Facebook posts about special offers.
